Mobility Scooter Grants Ireland

Mobility Scooters Ireland

A common question we are asked a lot is are there any grants for mobility scooters purchased in Ireland. The short answer is no unfortunately there are no current official grants available from the state.

That said you can apply to the social welfare receiving officer under the urgent needs grant and they may or may not subsidise part of the cost. You will be asked have you been seen by a HSE professional i.e an occupational Therapist under the medical card scheme. There is often a long waiting time from referral to being approved for the mobility scooter the model and size of which will be decided by the clinician after a full assessment of you needs and living conditions. Due to the protracted timeline for getting a mobility device via the HSE the user will most likely look to purchase privately, this is where you need to be cautious as not all mobility scooters are the same although the may look like it and not all shops that sell mobility scooters are the same. Do your research and both the brand of scooter and the company that is selling it. Buying a cheap scooter on line from either here or online from the UK has it’s pit falls when it comes to quality and back up.

Questions to ask:

Are you based in Ireland?

Do you have a physical showroom?

Do you have a certified engineer and repair department?

What warranties are offered on the mobility scooter?

PLEASE PLEASE always check the credentials of the seller if buying online, if the mobility scooter is way cheaper than the normal shops it most likely is a SCAM. Currently most mobility shops have a starting price of around €950.00 fora good quality small mobility scooter.
